Cake smash sessions have gained so much popularity in Amman over the last few years as a fun and stylish way to celebrate the big first birthday! Who can resist? when at the end you will have beautiful images to show your child? “and this was when you suddenly decided to crawl over the cake” “you made such a mess” “you were too elegant to eat cake with your hands” …Isn’t that the whole point?
We have put together this blog post as an inspiration guide, to help you plan your own session and to share some tips and tricks we have learned along the years…
First things first… the cake
Cakes are the foundation of this session….We offer several types of cakes but our favourite has to be the naked cake, specifically, this healthy version from munchies…homemade with love by a mama who’s passionate about healthy eating, so she created this cake which is gluten and dairy free, sweetened only with dates and fruit; the perfect option for the health conscious mama who wants only the best for her baby! Keep reading to see examples of different setups below…and some more cake styles
Second….the Setup!
We are known for simplicity….and after rebranding the studio we decided stick to the style we love most for all sessions; we love pastels, fresh flowers, vintage vibes and an overall light theme, even though we sometimes use a dark background when the theme fits…We also try to avoid really specific themes …like a theme based off of a cartoon character and instead opt for themes that are timeless; we don’t want the photos of your baby to ever go out of fashion! Check out the photos below to get inspired
Here is a little breakdown of the setups to give more insight
- We went with an animal theme here for twin boys, we still kept it simple and I feel it fits our style, but it’s fun to do something different every now and then
- This one is very simple and based off of the baby’s name, we gifted his mom the banner to keep after the session
- a simple banner and a pink tutu was all that was needed for this setup (Final image below)
- This year we ventured outdoors for the session and created a lovely vintage setup for a baby girl
- The mama said her baby loves oranges and we went with it…I love the Arabic (سنة) in the background personally
- I love how elegant this setup is…and when it’s all white it really brings focus to the baby too
- This one has a pop of colour in the cake and fresh greens from the garden complete the look
- I hand painted these flowers to have something unique for the sweet girl, and Sara completed the setup with her magical touches!
- You can’t go wrong with roses for a little girl, and I love the details on the cake!
Third….what to wear!
Well…babies don’t need to wear too much for a cake smash, sometimes a diaper cover is more than enough but generally, for boys, a neutral romper or a pain of jeans, suspenders also look really great in all sessions! For girls, I also love rompers, one piece little suits in a pastel colour, Tutus can look nice , but they shouldn’t be too bright or too big…finally a ruffled diaper cover can also look amazing and really bring the attention to the star of the show!
Finally…The results
Let me tell you something…not all babies love cakes…in fact…some of them are actually frightened of it….its actually one of the more interesting parts of the job to see how different babies react ..some babies though absolutely love it and have a blast and make a big mess! We don’t force babies to touch the cake if they dont like it …we try to keep them as happy as we can…but sometimes it is out of our hand …what do you think your baby would do when faced with a cake that they can smash?
The Aftermath
If you have read this far….then you can imagine how much work goes into creating a successful cake smash session, from communicating back and forth with the client to get to know their wishes and their style, to ordering the cake and doing our best to ensure that there are no mistakes, to creating the final setups which often requires us to shop for supplies or flowers….finally to the actual session where we also need to manage the baby’s mood and do our best to capture his/her best expressions….actually, the final part is the clean up…depending on the session it is either a breeze or a mammoth task….yet they are so fun to do and we can’t complain about having one of the best jobs out there!
